As travel demand grows, traditional land border checkpoints are under pressure. Toppan Next Tech, a global leader in security and identity solutions, is redefining the experience with a fully automated, AI-powered border clearance system. In partnership with Paravision, this next-generation solution combines advanced biometrics, vehicle screening, and seamless automation to deliver faster, safer, and more secure land crossings.

Toppan is a global leader in security and identity technologies, helping both governments and institutions modernize border control, biometric verification and authentication across Asia, and around the world. With more than a century of innovation and a commitment to national security, Toppan has become synonymous with highly advanced identity management, trusted document authentication, and AI-driven automation solutions designed to meet the demands of today’s
high-volume, high-security environments.

As land borders experience surging traffic from increased travel and trade, legacy checkpoint systems are reaching their limits. Long lines, manual checks, and disjointed processes frustrate travelers and strain border agencies. Toppan is addressing this challenge with a next-generation, fully automated land border processing system— designed to accelerate throughput without compromising security.

By combining facial biometric verification, AI-powered vehicle screening, and autonomous decisioning, this system ensures both operational efficiency and rigorous threat detection.

In collaboration with Paravision, Toppan integrates world-class face recognition and liveness detection into its border technology stack, delivering seamless biometric authentication that performs under real-world conditions. Whether verifying a driver’s face against a travel document or detecting unauthorized access attempts, Paravision’s Identity AI plays a critical role in enabling secure and smooth border crossings.

A New Model for Border Control

Toppan’s automated land border system integrates biometric authentication, Automatic License Plate Recognition, undercarriage

scanning, and AI-screening to identify and process individuals and vehicles in real time. Travelers and goods can cross borders with minimal friction, while authorities benefit from heightened security, accurate risk assessments, and efficient enforcement capabilities.

This comprehensive approach doesn’t just improve the traveler experience—it transforms how nations protect their borders. By eliminating outdated manual processes and embracing AI at every layer, Toppan’s system represents a major leap forward for national security and transportation efficiency.

With Toppan and Paravision working in concert, the future of land border clearance is here: fast, secure, scalable, and ready for what’s next.

How It Works: A Step-by-Step Process

01 Arrival & Pre-Clearance Check: As vehicles approach the border checkpoint, AI-driven surveillance systems automatically detect and count the number of occupants, associating this data with the vehicle registration number obtained via Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system. If the detected occupancy exceeds a predefined threshold (e.g., more than five passengers), the vehicle is automatically redirected to a manual inspection lane for further scrutiny. All other vehicles are seamlessly routed toward the automated clearance process, ensuring optimized traffic flow and operational efficiency from the point of entry.

02 Vehicle Pre-Screening: Vehicles directed to automated lanes undergo an integrated pre-screening protocol that includes high-resolution undercarriage imaging to identify potential threats or anomalies. Additionally, a manual luggage compartment (boot) inspection is conducted to detect unauthorized cargo or concealed items, enhancing overall checkpoint security prior to entry into the secure zone.

03 Autonomous Clearance Process: Vehicles are guided into designated clearance lanes using overhead video guidance systems. Within the secure mantrap area, travelers interact with multi-functional kiosks that facilitate identity verification and payment processing. These kiosks support document reading and multi-modal biometric authentication—comprising facial recognition, iris scanning, and fingerprint matching—to ensure precise and secure identity validation for each occupant.

04 Clearance & Exit: Upon successful biometric authentication and payment confirmation, vehicles are automatically released into designated exit lanes. The system supports both remote operator oversight and tablet-based, on-site assistance to accommodate special cases and ensure operational resilience across all scenarios.
